History 1959 - 2005

--1959--

On Sept. 11, 1959, a group of people met in the home of the Virgil Finkenbinders (see photo: located on 4th Avenue SE) for the purpose of organizing a Southern Baptist church in Cedar Rapids. Brother Everett Bryant was associate superintendent of missions in Missouri. He and his wife came, representing the Missouri Baptist Office. With his wealth of experience, he was instrumental in helping with the election of officers and various business matters which concern a new mission. Others present at that first meeting were: Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Finkenbinder and daughter, Susan; Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Plummer and daughters, Deborah and Patty; Miss Harriet Wigger; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Carter and son, Artie; and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Moore. To begin the meeting, all those present stood and read the Church Covenant, pledging membership by letter into the new church. Officers elected were Wendell Plummer, moderator; Harriet Wigger, church clerk; and Everett Moore, treasurer. A committee of two, Mrs. Virgil Finkenbinder and Mrs. Everett Moore, was appointed to bring to the group at the next meeting suggestions for a name for the church. This meeting was closed with prayer by Wendell Plummer, with the understanding that prayer meetings would be conducted in various homes each Wednesday evening until a suitable place could be found for Sunday School and preaching services.

On Sept. 16, 1959, our first prayer meeting was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Finkenbinder. After the prayer meeting, a brief business meeting was conducted, with the moderator, Wendell Plummer, in charge. Very little progress had been made in securing a meeting place or a name for the new church. After much discussion, the meeting was closed with prayer by Mrs. Arthur Carter.

On Sept. 26, 1959, the prayer meeting was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Plummer (see photo: located on Mount Vernon Road SE). After a season of prayer, a discussion of the church name followed. The committee presented the name "Immanuel Baptist Church" and this was accepted unanimously.

Information was brought before the group that the WMT Theater in the YMCA Building could be used for $10 per week, with the privilege of use on Sunday morning and evening and also on Wednesday evening. All agreed that this would be suitable until a permanent location could be secured. Motions were passed to open Sunday school on Oct. 4, 1959, to order Southern Baptist literature, and to put an advertisement in the Cedar Rapids Gazette each week concerning our services. The meeting was closed with prayer by Mrs. Dorothy Plummer.

On Oct. 4, 1959, the first Sunday school and preaching service of Immanuel Baptist Church were held in the YMCA Building (see photo: located on First Avenue). One adult class, taught by Mrs. Virgil Finkenbinder, and one children's class, taught by Mrs. Dorothy Plummer, met on this day. There were 19 present for Sunday school, with 21 in the morning service. The first offering was $124.60. Brother J.S. Laws was the supply preacher for this memorable occasion. During October and November, as attendance grew, several new classes were formed: Young Peoples and Intermediates, with Wendell Plummer as teacher; Juniors, with Miss Harriet Wigger as teacher; Primaries, with Mrs. Arthur Carter as teacher; and Beginners, with Mrs. Wendell Plummer as teacher.

On Nov. 10, 1959, Rev. J.T. Elliff, pastor of the Bethany Baptist Church of Kansas City, Mo., and Bro. L.J. Largen, chairman of the Missions committee of Bethany, made a trip to Cedar Rapids to inform us that their church had voted to sponsor our mission work. The matters of securing a pastor and property for a church building were discussed. Brother Elliff advised that they would send students from Midwestern Baptist Seminary in Kansas City each Sunday until we could secure a pastor.

On Nov. 22, 1959, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Hicks were accepted into the church by promise of letter from the Fairview (Iowa) Baptist Church. They were the first members to be added since the organizational meeting.

On Nov. 29, 1959, Brother Lewis Miller, a student at Southwestern Seminary, preached a trial sermon. On Dec. 2, a regular business meeting was held. Brother Lew Miller was approved by the church as a prospective pastor following his graduation from seminary. Also, a committee consisting of Arthur Carter, Virgil Finkenbinder and Everett Moore was appointed to bring recommendations for a permanent church location.

--1960--

In a regular business meeting on Jan. 6, 1960, a motion was made and passed that 10% of all regular offerings be sent to the Southern Baptist Cooperative Program. Additions to the church during the month of January were M/Sgt and Mrs. Lawton Deal, Misses Anna and Brenda Deal, and Mr. and Mrs. Lew Miller.

Bro. Lew Miller preached his first sermon as pastor of our church on Jan. 24, 1960.

Brother Elliff and the Bethany Missions Committee, composed of Bros. L.J. Largen, Jack Land and Bill Miller, visited with us on Feb. 23, 1960. We decided to make a definite offer for a 4-1/2 acre tract of land owned by Walter Van Pelt at 19th Street and F Avenue NW, which would be our permanent church site. We were able to secure this property for $17,500.

Feb. 28, 1960, was a big day for us. Three people united with us -- Mr. Bob Martin by letter and Mr. and Mrs. Don Burlingham by statement. A bank was presented to the church by Arthur Carter, along with his birthday offering and a recommendation that we begin sending birthday offerings to the Missouri Baptist Children's Home. All agreed to this. In the evening, our Training Union was organized with the help of Brother John Crutchfield from the Missouri Baptist Office. Arthur Carter was elected Training Union director. There were 25 in attendance for this first meeting of our Training Union.

Sandra and Sherrill Spencer came for baptism on March 2. Then, on March 6, 1960, along with Pam Van Der Snick and Mike Deal, they were baptized in the YMCA swimming pool. This was the first baptism service of our church. On this same day the following were accepted into our church by letter: Mr. and Mrs. Pete Hurn and son, Michael; and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Keith and daughter, Sherrie. Reed Keith came for baptism.

On March 18, 1960, a group of women met at the home of Mrs. Virgil Finkenbinder for the purpose of organizing the Women's Missionary Union. Those present were: Effie Mae Finkenbinder, Mrs. Harry Wigger, Harriet Wigger, Jessie Carter, Dorothy Plummer, Flute Moore, Theda Hurn, Marge Deal and Ann Burlingham. Mrs. Harry Wigger gave a brief history of the WMU and explained the duties of the various officers. The Sunday school, under the direction of Lynn Frantz, was running well over 100 in the new quarters. Don and Orla Gray were the first to be baptized in the new church building.

The first VBS was held June 5-16 with 112 enrolled.

Because of crowded conditions, the church split into two Sunday Schools. Don Gray was the first and only superintendent to undertake such a project. Sunday school No. 1 met at 8:30, followed by morning worship at 9:45. Sunday school No. 2 met at 11. This solved the problem of a Sunday school class meeting in the furnace room behind the library!

Pastor Miller decided to counteract this heresy and placed these slogans on our church signs: "If Your God Is dead, Try Ours, He Lives" and "If Your God Is Dead, It's Because You Are!" With a steady growth in attendance and membership, it was necessary for the chapel to move to larger quarters. On Sept. 11, the congregation moved to a rented store building at 115 Sixth St. SE (see photo: location in 1972 was C.R. Tent and Awning Co.; in 2003, its a parking ramp for MCI) A Cedar Rapids Gazette reporter couldn't pass up a good thing and took pictures of both signs and gave us a quarter page of free advertising, plus it went over the wires of the news services and appeared in many newspapers across the nation.
